Look at this picture. Ok, it is a beautiful picture of a man wind sailing over the deep blue ocean. Off in the distance, it’s the coast with what looks like windmills going at a feverish pace. Nice, huh? Yet, what is holding the man up? It’s his incredible feets of strength? No, no, it is the parachute? No, please let me describe.
Taken from John 3:1-8, Nick is the ruler of the Jews, & he wanted to see Jesus since he heard all the commotion about Him. Furthermore, Nick is no dummy because he comes to Jesus at night & as one of the many rulers of the Jews as he says, “Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God, for no one can do the signs that You do unless God is with him.” Hmm…
Jesus answers him with an answer he wasn’t seeking, at least not by his question. Jesus answers him, “Truly, truly, I say unto you, unless a man be born again, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.” As bright as he is, this one stumped him as Nick said, “How can a man be born when he is old? How can a man be born a second time?”
Jesus calmly answered, “Truly, truly, I say unto you, unless one is born of water & the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of flesh is flesh; that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows where it wishes, & here its sound, but you don’t know where it goes. So It is with everyone born of the Spirit.”
Now back to the picture…
See, the wind is invisible powering the person to go & wind sail. The same goes for us True Life Christians. We cannot do anything on our own. Oh, wait a minute, as you say, “What about the parachute that empowers the perspn to go, thus moving that person?”
It is simple. Without the Spirit, we can do nothing. The parachute is just a tool just like college is a tool for further eduation. However, when you get out in the real world, you finally realize this is where the rubber meets the road. Just think about it…
