Jesus didn’t preach His famous “Sermon on the Mount” in a white picketed fenced church with stained glass windows in which it casts beautifully colored shadows on the inside. No, He didn’t. Rather, Jesus Christ taught the people on a mountain side. Jesus was pretty controversial with His teaching stating that
They are blessed who realize their spiritual poverty, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to them. (Matthew 5:3 NCV)
However, Jesus was not finished there. He went on to say,
They are blessed who are persecuted for doing good, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to them. People will insult you and hurt you. They will lie and say all kinds of evil things about you because you follow Me. But when they do, you will be blessed. Rejoice and be glad, because you have a great reward waiting for you in heaven. People did the same evil things to prophets who lived before you. (Matthew 5:10-12 NCV)
Later the Apostle Peter would write,
For to this you have been called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in His steps. (1 Peter 2:21 ESV)
