“And Joshua said unto them, Fear not, nor be dismayed, be strong and of good courage: for thus shall the LORD do to all your enemies against whom ye fight” (Joshua 10:25).
Joshua said this to the men at war with him since God had assured them a victory over the five kings and much more. However, one has to go back to (click on) Joshua 9 where the Gibeonites tricked Joshua simply because he didn’t consult the LORD. It turns out that the Gibeonites were just three day’s journey away instead of what they told Joshua, and they made a league with the Israelites so they wouldn’t kill them but let them live. The definition of a league is an association of persons or groups united by common interests or goals.
The five kings were afraid of the Gibeonites, and there new alliance with Joshua and the fighting men of Israel, found in the beginning of (click on) Joshua 10. Going back to chapter 9, the Gibeonites tricked Joshua and the whole Israeli army to not kill them because Joshua didn’t consult the LORD on the issue. But, instead, that the Israelite army would fight for the land of Gibea against the five kings and their entourage.
Then the fighting men of Gibeon asked Joshua to help them to fight for their land as Joshua and the whole Israeli army fought till the sun went down:
“Then spake Joshua to the LORD in the day when the LORD delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; And thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon. And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, Until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day. And there was no day like that before it or after it, that the LORD hearkened unto the voice of a man: for the LORD fought for Israel.”
Joshua 10:12-14
In the early daylight hours of that day, the five kings successfully hid themselves in a cave; however, as Joshua found out about it, he had some Israeli soldiers put great stones to cover the mouth of the cave. Once there wasn’t anything left to that land and the Israeli soldiers cleared the access to the mouth of the cave, the five kings came out and were about to die as Joshua said this to the warring men of Israel:
“. . . Fear not, nor be dismayed, be strong and of good courage: for thus shall the LORD do to all your enemies against whom ye fight. And afterward Joshua smote them, and slew them, and hanged them on five trees: and they were hanging upon the trees until the evening.”
Joshua 10:25-26
Now I contend that if it is in the LORD’s will, and each Christian has access to Jesus through the Holy Spirit to know what the LORD’s will is, then the LORD has the power through us to do the impossible. So, we, as Christians, need to do the LORD’s will, and He, in turn, will do the impossible.
